India | Nov 22, 2025 – :
Banks across the country will operate on a limited schedule in December 2025, with a total of 18 days marked as non-working. The list includes national observances, regional festivals and routine weekly closures that vary from state to state. Customers who rely on branch services have been advised to complete key transactions early to avoid delays around the end-of-year banking rush.
The month begins with regional holidays such as Indigenous Faith Day in Arunachal Pradesh on December 1, followed by St. Francis Xavier Day in Goa on December 3. Several northeastern states have additional observances mid-month, alongside Guru Ghasi Das Jayanti in Chhattisgarh on December 18. Christmas on December 25 is a nationwide holiday, and some states also have closures on December 31 for local New Year events. In addition to these, the usual weekly shutdowns apply: all Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays will remain non-working.
While these holidays impact physical branches, digital platforms will remain accessible. Customers can use internet banking, mobile apps, ATMs and UPI services throughout the month, even on days when branches are closed. Still, certain services like cheque clearances, loan processing, locker access, demand drafts and in-person verifications can only be handled at the branch level. For this reason, banks recommend planning tasks that require physical presence well in advance.
Businesses that depend on banking cycles, including traders, small retailers and service providers, may also feel the effect of the reduced working days. End-of-quarter settlement, GST payments, payroll processing and vendor settlements often require timely bank updates. With several closures clustered near the final week of December, companies may choose to adjust their internal deadlines or move payments forward.
The impact will be more noticeable in states with several local observances in December. Northeastern states, parts of the South and regions with tribal festivals will experience longer stretches of bank closures compared with others. In Maharashtra and other western states, the schedule primarily affects days around weekends and Christmas.
Branch managers expect heavier footfall on working days leading into long holiday stretches. Banks typically deploy additional staff during peak hours or extend token timings to ensure pending transactions are completed before the break. Customers who need to complete KYC updates, document submissions or large cash withdrawals are encouraged to visit branches earlier in the month.
The end of the year is also a period when many individuals complete their financial planning tasks, including tax-saving investments, account updates and loan-related documentation. With fewer operational days in December, delays may occur if these tasks are left too close to holiday dates. Customers holding time-bound instruments like fixed deposit renewals or EMI adjustments may also need to check their due dates and ensure automatic payments are set up correctly.
Overall, December 2025 will have fewer working days for banks than most months, and timely preparation remains the best way to avoid inconvenience. Bank officials say the full holiday list varies by region, and customers should refer to state-wise schedules or check with their nearest branch for exact dates.
