Maharashtra Revenue Minister Bawankule announced that after electricity‑bill waivers, a farm‑loan waiver for needy farmers will follow soon  raising hope across Kolhapur’s agricultural community.

Kolhapur| 26 November 2025: In a recent rally in Hupari, Kolhapur, Chandrashekhar Bawankule addressed farmer grievances and promised a farm‑loan waiver soon, following earlier relief on agricultural electricity bills amounting to ₹27,000 crore.

He assured that the state government recognises the severe distress of small and marginal farmers and will extend debt relief after finalising eligibility criteria. The waiver plan is part of a broader promise which the government aims to implement by mid‑2026.

Bawankule clarified that the waiver will be targeted only at “genuine” cultivators  those who took crop loans for actual agriculture, not those who converted farmland into farmhouses or luxury properties. Eligible beneficiaries will be identified through a committee already formed to study loan‑waiver norms.

The announcement has triggered cautious optimism among farmers in Kolhapur, where recent crop losses and rising loan burdens have hit rural households hard. Many farmers said they await clear directives from banks and cooperative institutions before heaving sighs of relief.

However, critics warn that previous promises of loan waivers have faced troubled implementation and urge the government to ensure transparent, timely delivery of relief without bureaucratic delays.

As the state finalises the waiver policy, stakeholders across agriculture and banking sectors will watch developments closely  hoping that the long‑pending relief finally arrives in time for the next crop cycle.
