BJP leaders in Karnataka held an “empty pot” protest outside Vidhana Soudha, accusing the Siddaramaiah government’s state budget of being anti-people and financially irresponsible

Bengaluru | March 07, 2026: Political tensions escalated in Karnataka after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders staged a symbolic protest against the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The demonstration took place outside Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, where BJP legislators accused the Congress government of presenting a “development-less” and financially burdensome budget.

Soon after the budget presentation concluded, BJP leaders gathered at the Grand Steps of Vidhana Soudha carrying empty vessels, locally referred to as “Khaali Chambu,” to symbolically express their dissatisfaction with the government’s financial plan. The protest was meant to portray the budget as an “empty promise” that offers little relief to citizens.Several prominent BJP figures, including Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka and state BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra, participated in the protest. The leaders marched across the Vidhana Soudha premises and raised slogans criticising the Congress government’s economic policies.

Opposition leaders alleged that the budget would push the state into deeper financial stress and accused the government of failing to address key issues such as rising costs and economic stability. They argued that the financial plan lacked concrete measures to ease the burden on ordinary citizens.

The Congress government, however, rejected the criticism, stating that the opposition was politicising the budget for political gains. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah defended the financial proposals, maintaining that the budget focuses on welfare schemes and inclusive development.

The protest reflects the growing political confrontation between the ruling Congress and the BJP in the state following the budget presentation, with both sides intensifying their rhetoric over Karnataka’s fiscal policies and development priorities.
