New Delhi | November 22, 2025: In a landmark political development, the BJP has secured the Home Ministry in Bihar for the first time, with Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary assuming charge of law enforcement, policing, and internal security. Previously, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had overseen this crucial portfolio for nearly two decades.

This transfer is significant because the Home Ministry is central to state governance. By controlling it, the BJP strengthens its influence over Bihar’s security apparatus while consolidating its role within the NDA government in the state. Meanwhile, Nitish Kumar’s party has taken over the Finance Ministry, reflecting a strategic exchange that recalibrates the balance of power.

Analysts note that the BJP’s growing assembly strength, combined with control over key administrative levers, positions the party to implement reforms and influence policy on law and order. The Home Ministry oversees the police, CID, and special security units, giving Choudhary a direct role in shaping state security strategies.

For Choudhary, this appointment elevates his political stature. Serving as both Deputy CM and Home Minister places him among the most powerful leaders in the state cabinet. For Nitish Kumar, the move allows him to retain other significant portfolios, ensuring continued influence over governance while sharing power strategically.

The BJP’s stewardship of the Home Ministry could also enhance coordination with central law enforcement and security agencies, aligning state-level policies with broader national priorities. At the same time, it introduces greater accountability, as any lapses in law-and-order management will reflect directly on the party.
