Maharashtra’s irrigation initiatives including Shirapur, Barshi, Ekrukh schemes and 21 barrages on Bhima-Sina river will supply water to about 8 lakh acres of agricultural land by December 2027

Solapur | February 14, 2026: Several major irrigation projects in Maharashtra’s Solapur district are advancing rapidly and are expected to transform agricultural irrigation coverage in the region. The ongoing initiatives, including the Shirapur, Barshi and Ekrukh irrigation schemes, aim to significantly expand water supply for farming, with around 8 lakh acres of agricultural land projected to receive irrigation water by December 2027.

The foundational water source for these schemes is the Ujjani Dam, constructed on the Bhima River, which currently provides irrigation to about 1.5 lakh hectares in the district after its completion in June 1980. New distribution and feeder canal systems are being developed under major lift irrigation and barrage construction projects to broaden this coverage.

Among the key components are the Shirapur, Barshi and Ekrukh schemes, which are expected to be completed by June 2026, bringing substantial additional farmland under irrigation. Other projects in nearby areas such as Degav, Asthi, Sangola and Mangalvedha are underway and scheduled for completion by December 2027, further increasing irrigated acreage.

The irrigation works also include the construction of 21 barrages along the Bhima-Sina river system structures that help regulate water flow and distribute it through canal networks to adjacent farming areas. These barrages will support better water control, ensure supply during dry seasons, and reduce dependence on erratic rainfall.

Officials from the Bhima Canal Division noted that expanding irrigation infrastructure will boost crop output, help diversify agricultural practices, and enhance the economic stability of farming communities in the district. The planned expansions are also expected to increase sugarcane cultivation and support horticulture and allied agricultural sectors.

Once fully operational, these irrigation initiatives will mark one of the largest increases in irrigated farmland in the Solapur region, reflecting the state’s commitment to improving agricultural resilience and water resource management.
