: Shakti, a nine-and-a-half-year-old Royal Bengal tiger at the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan in Byculla, passed away suddenly last week. He was brought to the Byculla Zoo in 2020 along with his mate Karishma and had remained one of the most popular attractions for visitors.

His unexpected death has sparked concern among animal lovers, with some questioning whether negligence may have played a role. Zoo officials have denied any such lapse and stated that Shakti died from respiratory failure caused by pneumonia. According to the authorities, his health had deteriorated rapidly, and despite treatment efforts, he could not be revived.

Shakti’s death has saddened regular visitors and wildlife enthusiasts, who remember him as one of the zoo’s most striking big cats. An internal assessment of his medical history and treatment has also been initiated to ensure clarity and transparency.

The incident has renewed discussions on improving zoo healthcare systems and monitoring protocols. As the zoo prepares to release a detailed report, many hope Shakti’s loss will lead to stronger welfare standards and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
