Speakers at a Pune seminar demanded uniform laws for Muslims, highlighting issues like polygamy and gender inequality, while urging stronger support for reforms and protection of Muslim women’s rights

Pune | 23 March, 2026: A strong call for implementing uniform laws within the Muslim community was raised during a seminar organised by Muslim Satyashodhak Mandal in Pune, focusing on gender justice and social reform.

The discussion, held to mark the organisation’s 56th foundation day, brought together activists and scholars who highlighted the need to address practices such as polygamy, which they described as unjust towards women. Speakers stressed that extending equal legal frameworks could play a crucial role in safeguarding the rights of Muslim women.

Participants, including Firoz Mithiborwala, Zakia Soman and Noorjehan Safia Niaz, emphasised that reform movements within the community require broader public support. Concerns were also raised that secular platforms have not adequately addressed issues faced by Muslim women.

Chairing the session, Dr Shamsuddin Tamboli stated that legal reforms, including the possibility of approaching the Supreme Court of India, are being considered to challenge practices like polygamy. He noted that any move towards a Uniform Civil Code must align with constitutional principles.

Speakers pointed out that despite India’s secular framework, Muslim women often face limitations compared to their counterparts in several other countries. They argued that reforms should focus on empowerment rather than targeting any particular community. The seminar also featured findings from surveys highlighting the adverse impact of polygamy on women, with participants urging sustained social and legal efforts to ensure equality and justice.
