Use of CCTV surveillance during key examinations in Maharashtra led to a significant fall in results, with some centres recording up to 90 percent decline compared to last year’s performance

Pune | 19 March, 2026: The introduction of CCTV surveillance at select examination centres by the Maharashtra State Examination Council has resulted in a noticeable decline in results for computer typing and NMMS examinations this year.

According to Council Chairman Dr. Nandakumar Bedse, the move was implemented on a pilot basis to curb malpractices during exams. Centres that recorded over 70 percent results in the previous year were selected for CCTV installation to ensure stricter monitoring. The impact has been striking. A comparison between last year’s and this year’s results at the same centres revealed a drop ranging from 1 percent to as high as 90 percent in the computer typing examination. Similarly, the NMMS exam results saw a decline between 6 percent and 90 percent at various centres.

The CCTV system was deployed across multiple districts, including Ahilyanagar, Solapur, Nashik, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Ratnagiri, Jalna, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Beed, Parbhani, Buldhana, Yavatmal, Gondia, Chandrapur, Dharashiv, and Nanded for typing exams. For NMMS, selected centres in districts such as Dhule, Amravati, Akola, Nandurbar, Latur, Washim, Bhandara, and others were covered.

Officials stated that around 205 centres conducted the computer typing exam, with surveillance introduced at selected locations. The findings suggest that stricter monitoring may have reduced unfair practices, directly impacting overall performance figures.

The council is expected to further review the outcomes before expanding CCTV implementation across more examination centres in the future.
