A civil engineer and his associate were arrested in Pune with hydroponic marijuana worth ₹6.5 lakh, exposing a growing trend of high-end drug circulation among youth and professionals.

Pune | 30 March, 2026: In a significant anti-narcotics operation, Pune police arrested a 24-year-old civil engineer and his 21-year-old friend for possession of hydroponic marijuana worth approximately ₹6.5 lakh. The was carried out by the Pimpri-Chinchwad crime branch following a tip-off, highlighting the increasing presence of high-grade drugs in the city.

According to police officials, the duo was apprehended near a residential society in the Mhalunge area after a trap was laid by the crime branch team. During the operation, authorities recovered around 60 grams of hydroponic weed from their possession.

Investigations revealed that the accused were residents of a housing complex in the Bavdhan area of Pune. While the civil engineer hails from Buldhana district, his associate is from Jalgaon and had recently come to Pune in search of employment.

Police sources further stated that the contraband was allegedly sourced from a supplier based in Mumbai and was intended for distribution within Pune. Preliminary interrogation suggests that the accused were not only consuming the substance themselves but had also started selling it to fund their addiction and earn money.

A case has been registered at the Bavdhan police station under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway to identify the supply network and possible links to a larger drug distribution chain.

This incident comes amid a worrying rise in cases involving hydroponic marijuana, a high-potency and expensive variant of cannabis, often linked to urban consumption patterns among students and young professionals. Authorities have indicated that Pune has witnessed multiple such cases in recent months, suggesting an emerging trend.

Law enforcement agencies have intensified surveillance and crackdown operations to curb the spread of narcotics in the city. Officials have urged citizens, especially youth, to stay away from substance abuse and report suspicious activities to the police.

The arrest once again underscores the growing challenge faced by enforcement agencies in tackling drug networks operating through urban channels. With investigations continuing, police are hopeful of uncovering a broader nexus behind the supply of such premium narcotics in Pune.
