CM Fadnavis fixes three-year deadline for Pune–Shirur elevated corridor to speed key route
Fadnavis
CM Devendra Fadnavis has ordered fast-tracking of the 53.4-km Pune–Shirur elevated corridor, setting a strict three-year deadline to ease congestion and support industries along this high-traffic highway.
Mumbai| November 20, 2025: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed agencies to complete the Pune–Shirur elevated corridor within three years, calling the project a critical upgrade for one of Maharashtra’s busiest industrial routes. The 53.4-km corridor received high-level approval in a review meeting held in Mumbai, which was attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde, along with senior officials from the state infrastructure bodies.
The project aims to ease heavy movement on the Pune–Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar highway, where daily congestion affects both commuters and the transport of goods. Industrial clusters along the Pune–Shirur stretch add substantial load to the route, leading the Chief Minister to declare that delays in execution would not be tolerated due to the economic implications involved.
Project Structure and Design
The plan includes a four-lane surface road and a six-lane elevated corridor built above it. This dual-layer design is expected to significantly increase road capacity, reduce bottlenecks, and allow smoother movement for commercial vehicles. Officials explained that this approach will support long-term demand without requiring major additional land acquisition.
Special 7.4-km Integrated Segment
A key component of the project is a 7.4-km section that will be developed jointly by Maha Metro and MSIDC. This stretch will feature an at-grade road with a Metro line running overhead, making it essential for both agencies to coordinate closely to avoid delays and ensure safety standards.
Execution Timeline and Next Steps
Fadnavis has instructed MSIDC to move quickly, and the agency has already initiated the tendering process. Work is expected to begin near Vimannagar, with instructions issued to all departments to remove administrative and technical hurdles promptly.
Officials at the meeting reviewed progress charts and agreed to accelerate each stage of the project. The Chief Minister emphasized that timely completion is crucial for improving regional connectivity, supporting industries, and reducing the strain on Pune’s existing corridors.
