Congress to Contest 2026 BMC Election Independently, Says Ramesh Chennithala

Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala has announced that the party will contest the 2026 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation election independently, opting out of alliance politics in Mumbai.

Mumbai, December 20, 2025 – Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala has announced that the party will contest the 2026 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation election independently, marking a major strategic shift ahead of one of Maharashtra’s most high-profile civic polls. The declaration signals the Congress party’s decision to step away from alliance politics in Mumbai and focus on rebuilding its independent organisational strength in the city.

Chennithala stated that the Congress would field candidates across all 227 wards of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. He said the decision was taken after extensive discussions with local party leaders and workers, who expressed a strong desire to contest the elections without alliance constraints. According to him, fighting independently would allow the party to present a clear and uncompromised vision for Mumbai’s civic governance.

The announcement has added a new dimension to the already intense political contest surrounding the BMC election. The municipal corporation is not only the richest civic body in the country but also plays a decisive role in shaping Mumbai’s infrastructure, public health services, sanitation systems and urban planning. Control over the BMC is therefore seen as both an administrative and political milestone.

Chennithala emphasised that the Congress campaign would focus on everyday issues faced by Mumbai residents, including deteriorating roads, water shortages, waste management challenges, healthcare accessibility and housing concerns. He said the party aims to reconnect directly with voters by highlighting civic failures and proposing practical, people-centric solutions.

Traditionally, the Congress has been part of broader alliances in Maharashtra, especially in state and national elections. However, internal differences over seat sharing and local strategies have often complicated alliance dynamics during municipal polls. By choosing to contest independently, the Congress is seeking greater flexibility in candidate selection and messaging, particularly in urban constituencies where local leadership and ground-level engagement matter significantly.

Reactions to the announcement have been mixed. Supporters within the Congress believe the move will energise party workers and give emerging leaders opportunities to contest elections without being sidelined by alliance negotiations. They argue that a solo campaign can help restore the party’s identity and visibility in Mumbai, where its organisational presence has weakened over the years.

Rival parties and former allies have responded cautiously, with some suggesting that the decision could lead to opposition vote division and alter electoral equations. Political observers note that in closely contested wards, even small shifts in vote share can influence outcomes. An independent Congress contest could therefore reshape the dynamics of the civic election.

Analysts also point out that local body elections often differ from state and national polls, as voters tend to prioritise performance and accountability in civic services over broader ideological alignments. In that context, the Congress leadership appears to be betting on its ability to directly appeal to urban voters on governance issues.

With the election schedule approaching, the Congress is expected to accelerate preparations, including candidate finalisation, ward-level organisation and public outreach campaigns. Party leaders have indicated that strengthening grassroots networks and addressing civic grievances will be central to their strategy.
