The incident occurred in a high-security zone that routinely sees heavy movement of tourists, commuters and security personnel. Within moments of the explosion, flames engulfed nearby vehicles, causing thick smoke to rise and triggering panic among people in the area. Passersby rushed for cover while shopkeepers and metro staff alerted authorities. Fire tenders arrived quickly and worked to control the blaze, which had already spread to three or four vehicles parked close to the car that exploded.

Eyewitnesses described a loud boom followed by an intense fireball. Some people initially believed it to be a transformer blast, but police confirmed it originated from inside a vehicle.
