Renowned Japanese animator and longtime Doraemon director Tsutomu Shibayama has passed away, leaving behind a rich legacy that shaped generations of animation lovers worldwide.
Tokyo | March 20, 2026: The global animation industry is mourning the loss of Tsutomu Shibayama, the celebrated director best known for his long association with the iconic Japanese animated series Doraemon. Widely regarded as a pioneer in animation, Shibayama’s passing has left a deep void in the entertainment world.

Shibayama, often referred to as a key figure in shaping modern Japanese animation, had an illustrious career spanning over two decades with Doraemon. Since the show’s television debut in 1979, he played a pivotal role in taking the series to global audiences. Under his direction, the franchise flourished, with Shibayama helming as many as 22 feature films, ensuring its enduring popularity across generations.
His contribution extended far beyond a single series. In 1978, he co-founded Ajia-do Animation Works along with industry peers, laying the foundation for a studio that would go on to produce several acclaimed projects. Over the years, Shibayama directed and contributed to multiple successful animated titles, including Chibi Maruko-chan, Lupin III and Kaiketsu Zorori, further cementing his reputation as a versatile and visionary creator.

According to official confirmation from his studio, Shibayama had been battling Lung Cancer for some time. He passed away on March 6, 2026, though the news was publicly announced on March 17. In a statement, the studio described his death as an irreplaceable loss to the animation industry, calling him a “true artist whose contributions will continue to inspire.”
Shibayama’s work on Doraemon introduced beloved characters such as Nobita, Shizuka, Gian and Suneo to audiences worldwide. Through these characters, he not only entertained millions but also conveyed themes of friendship, imagination and perseverance, making the series a cultural phenomenon.
In India as well, Doraemon enjoys immense popularity, with generations of children growing up watching the adventures of the robotic cat and his friends. Shibayama’s creative vision played a crucial role in making the series a household name far beyond Japan.
