Pune witnesses a sharp spike in drumstick prices, crossing ₹500 per kilogram, as unseasonal rains in key southern states disrupt supply, impacting consumers, restaurants, and local vendors alike.
Pune| 25 November 2025: Drumstick, commonly known as sevga or moringa, has become a rare and expensive commodity in Pune markets. Over the past few weeks, the price per kilogram has surged past ₹500, leaving shoppers and vegetable vendors concerned.
The price hike is primarily attributed to unseasonal rainfall in southern India, particularly in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, which are major drumstick-producing regions. Heavy rains have affected flowering and pod development, resulting in significantly reduced yields. As a consequence, supplies reaching Pune have dropped drastically.
Local wholesale markets, including Gultekdi and Market Yard, report that daily arrivals have fallen from 4–5 tonnes to just a few hundred kilograms. Vendors claim that despite the high prices, demand remains steady, as drumstick is an essential ingredient in traditional curries, sambars, and local delicacies.
Restaurants in Pune are also facing challenges due to the sudden price surge. Many eateries serving South Indian cuisine have temporarily removed drumstick dishes from their menus, citing cost concerns. Consumers are similarly feeling the pinch, with many considering alternative vegetables for everyday cooking.
Farmers in producing states express frustration over the crop losses caused by unpredictable weather. While the current situation has driven prices up, traders expect some relief in the coming weeks. Fresh local supplies, once harvested, are likely to stabilize prices and ease the strain on consumers.
Until then, Pune residents are adjusting to the high cost of drumsticks, with both vendors and buyers keeping a close eye on market trends and weather forecasts.
