Elevated Road Along Mutha River Proposed to Ease Sinhagad Road Traffic in Pune
Sinhagad Road Traffic in Pune
A new elevated road along the Mutha river is being considered to reduce heavy congestion on Sinhagad Road, offering an alternative corridor and improving connectivity in Pune’s rapidly growing western suburbs.
Pune | 30 March, 2026: In a major step toward addressing chronic traffic congestion, authorities are exploring the construction of an elevated road along the Mutha River to ease pressure on the heavily burdened Sinhagad Road corridor. The proposal is currently under consideration as part of broader urban mobility planning in Pune.
Sinhagad Road, one of the city’s busiest arterial routes, has long struggled with severe traffic bottlenecks due to rapid urbanisation and increasing vehicle density. The road serves as a key link between residential hubs and central Pune, making daily commuting a challenge for thousands of citizens.

The proposed elevated corridor is expected to run parallel to the river, offering an alternative route for through traffic and reducing dependency on the existing road network. Urban planners believe that diverting a portion of vehicular movement to this new alignment could significantly ease congestion and improve travel times.
The idea of using riverbanks for infrastructure development is not entirely new. In fact, earlier proposals and discussions have also suggested aligning major transport projects, including metro routes, along the river or canal to minimise disruption on already crowded roads.
Officials indicate that the project is still in the planning and feasibility stage. Detailed studies will be required to assess environmental impact, land availability, and technical challenges associated with constructing an elevated structure along a नदी. Concerns related to ecological balance and flood management are also expected to play a crucial role in decision-making.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and other planning agencies are likely to evaluate how the proposed road integrates with ongoing projects such as metro expansions, flyovers, and riverfront development. Pune has already been investing heavily in infrastructure to tackle its growing traffic woes, including ring roads and elevated corridors in key areas.

Experts suggest that if executed effectively, the elevated road could act as a long-term solution for traffic decongestion in western Pune. However, they also caution that such projects must be carefully planned to avoid environmental degradation, especially given the ecological sensitivity of river zones.
Citizens and commuters have largely welcomed the proposal, hoping it will bring relief from daily traffic snarls. At the same time, environmental groups are expected to scrutinise the plan closely, given past concerns regarding construction activities near riverbeds.
With Pune’s population and vehicle numbers continuing to rise, the need for innovative and sustainable transport solutions has become more urgent than ever. The proposed elevated road along the Mutha river could become a key component of the city’s future mobility framework-provided it balances development with environmental responsibility.
