Pune | 07 March, 2026: Experts and researchers have raised concerns about the growing risk of a severe water crisis in Maharashtra if authorities fail to prioritise proper water planning and sustainable management practices. The warning emerged during a workshop attended by environmental researchers, journalists and water management specialists, where discussions focused on the declining effectiveness of existing water conservation systems. According to experts, both groundwater and surface water sources across the state are under increasing stress due to rising demand, rapid urbanisation and inconsistent planning.

Specialists pointed out that despite several water conservation initiatives, long-term planning and monitoring remain weak. Increasing population and expanding urban areas have placed additional pressure on available water resources, especially in rapidly developing cities such as Pune. Environmental researchers emphasised that water management must go beyond constructing storage structures or launching short-term government campaigns. They stressed that effective utilisation, proper distribution and long-term sustainability of water resources should be prioritised.

Experts associated with organisations such as the Water For People India Trust highlighted that many government-led sanitation and water initiatives have largely focused on building infrastructure but have paid limited attention to maintenance, monitoring and responsible water usage. Participants also noted that community participation remains a missing link in many water management programmes. While several projects have been implemented across rural and urban areas, the absence of local involvement often leads to poor maintenance and inefficient usage of water systems.

Researchers warned that if comprehensive planning, public awareness and sustainable water governance are not strengthened, Maharashtra could face a serious water scarcity challenge in the coming decade. They urged authorities, local bodies and citizens to work together to adopt integrated water management practices that promote conservation, efficient use and long-term protection of water resources
