A red “extortion notebook” from CPR Hospital reveals doctors and staff demanding illegal payments Rs 6.91 lakh noted for five months, triggering outrage and calls for swift investigation.
Kolhapur| 09 December 2025: In a shocking exposé, a red‑ink notebook unearthed from the corridors of CPR Hospital in Kolhapur has laid bare systematic extortion of patients. The records show that over just five months, patients were made to pay Rs 6.91 lakh, marked under entries addressed to “Madam” allegedly hospital staff involved in the scheme.

Further entries in the notebook suggest that from August to September alone, a staffer addressed as “Sir” received bribes totaling Rs 5 lakh.
The scandal emerged after members of a local political group conducted a sting operation and turned the evidence over to authorities. The incident has caused an uproar, with citizens demanding transparency and immediate disciplinary action. Healthcare officials have been put on notice by the state including Prakash Abitkar, the state’s guardian minister to identify the culprits marked as “Madam” and “Sir” in the ledger and take strong action.
This revelation adds to earlier accusations against CPR Hospital from issuing fake disability certificates to improperly steering patients to private labs for blood tests at inflated costs.
Residents and civil‑society groups are calling for an independent enquiry, arguing that such organized graft undermines public trust in state-run healthcare. The hospital administration has not issued an official response yet, but pressure is mounting for a clean‑up and accountability.
