Pune / Dubai, March 4, 2026: A group of Indian travellers, including women from Pune, remain stranded in Dubai after their return flights were abruptly cancelled due to escalating tensions in the West Asia crisis involving Iran and Israel. With hotel expenses mounting and limited clarity from airlines, many say their savings are rapidly depleting as they wait for confirmed departures.

The disruption follows temporary airspace restrictions and flight rescheduling across parts of the Middle East after heightened hostilities between Iran and Israel raised security concerns. Several international carriers either suspended or rerouted services, impacting thousands of passengers travelling between the United Arab Emirates and India.

According to stranded passengers, return tickets to Mumbai, Pune and other Indian cities were cancelled at short notice. While airlines cited operational and safety reasons linked to the regional situation, many travellers claim they were left without definite timelines for rescheduling.

Some passengers were reportedly rebooked on later flights, but confirmation remains uncertain. Others have been placed on long waiting lists as carriers prioritize limited operations.

“Each extra day here means additional hotel bills and food costs,” said one woman from Pune who travelled to Dubai for a short business visit. “We were prepared for a few days, not an indefinite stay.”

The aviation sector is particularly sensitive to geopolitical instability. When tensions rise between countries such as Iran and Israel, airspace over strategic corridors can be restricted or monitored more strictly. Airlines including Air India and other major international carriers have in the past adjusted flight paths or temporarily suspended services during such crises.

Dubai is a major global transit hub, connecting India with Europe and North America. Any disruption here affects not only direct travellers but also those on connecting routes such as the Mumbai-London flight corridor. Aviation analysts note that even limited restrictions can create cascading cancellations across international networks.In recent years, similar disruptions have occurred during conflicts and airspace shutdowns, leaving passengers stranded for days. The current situation mirrors that pattern, though authorities insist safety remains the top priority.

The Indian Embassy in the UAE has reportedly been in contact with affected citizens, advising them to remain in touch with airline helpdesks and monitor official updates. State officials from Maharashtra are also said to be compiling information about residents stranded in Dubai.

While no official evacuation has been announced so far, additional commercial flights are expected once normal operations stabilize. Airlines are coordinating with aviation regulators in both India and the UAE to restore schedules safely.

Civil aviation experts explain that restarting operations requires clearance from multiple authorities. “Airlines cannot simply resume flights without coordination between air traffic control systems and security agencies,” said aviation consultant Raghav Sharma. “Passenger safety and route security are always the deciding factors.”

Beyond logistical complications, the financial impact is becoming severe. Dubai is an expensive city for extended stays, and travellers who budgeted for short visits are now struggling to manage daily expenses. Some are seeking help from friends and family back home.

Visa extensions and accommodation costs are additional concerns. Although UAE authorities have occasionally relaxed overstay penalties during emergencies, clarity on the current situation remains limited.

Families waiting in Pune and other parts of Maharashtra have expressed anxiety, urging faster coordination between airlines and the government.

The flight cancellations underscore how interconnected global travel networks are. Events in West Asia can disrupt passengers thousands of kilometres away. Similar ripple effects were observed during other international incidents, from geopolitical flare-ups to natural disasters.For now, stranded Indians in Dubai are holding onto hope that scheduled services will normalize soon. Airlines have advised passengers to keep checking official websites and customer support channels for updates.
