Five Mobile Phones and Power Banks Seized During Surprise Search at Yerawada Central Jail

Pune | 26 February 2026: In a routine security sweep, officials at Yerawada Central Jail in Pune conducted a surprise search and seized five mobile phones, two power banks, and several charging cables from the facility. The operation was prompted after suspicious movement by an inmate near a washroom raised concerns of contraband smuggling.

The search, conducted on February 21, 2026, began when a jail official noticed unusual activity near a wash area. An inmate was found in possession of a mobile phone but failed to explain how it entered the premises. This led authorities to expand the inspection to multiple barracks, including Barracks 1, 2, and 6.

During the operation, officials discovered several devices, some hidden in bags outside the barracks, while others were found in the outer premises. Most mobile phones lacked batteries or SIM cards, but the presence of power banks and charging cables indicated that inmates had access to means for recharging devices.

Mobile phones and power banks are strictly prohibited in correctional facilities because they allow inmates to communicate with the outside world illegally, potentially facilitating criminal activity and undermining security. The discovery highlighted ongoing challenges in preventing contraband infiltration despite surveillance systems and routine patrols.

Following the seizure, a formal complaint was filed, and an FIR was registered against the inmate initially observed and other unidentified prisoners possibly involved. The investigation is being led jointly by local police and prison authorities to determine how the devices entered the jail and whether any internal collusion occurred.

Security experts stress that mobile phones inside prisons pose serious threats, enabling inmates to coordinate illegal activities, intimidate witnesses, or conduct unauthorized transactions. Random and unpredictable searches are considered essential to deter contraband and maintain order within correctional facilities.

The recent seizure at Yerawada Central Jail reflects a broader trend across correctional facilities in India, where contraband continues to challenge prison security. Authorities emphasize that ensuring safety requires strict protocols, staff vigilance, and technological assistance to detect hidden electronic devices.

Prison officials have reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing security protocols, conducting further inspections, and taking disciplinary action against any personnel found negligent or complicit in contraband movement.
