Former Cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin Nominated to Telangana Legislative Council by Congress Government

Ex-India cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin nominated as MLC under the Governor’s quota in Telangana, strengthening Congress’s representation and strategy.

Hyderabad, October 29, 2025 – Former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin has been nominated as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) in Telangana under the Governor’s quota. The state cabinet, led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, approved his name along with that of Professor M. Kodandaram for the posts that had remained vacant after earlier nominations were annulled by the Supreme Court.

Azharuddin’s nomination is being viewed as both a political and symbolic move by the Telangana Congress government. The decision addresses the lack of Muslim representation in the cabinet and simultaneously strengthens the party’s position ahead of the Jubilee Hills bypoll. Azharuddin, who had contested the 2023 assembly elections from Jubilee Hills but lost, will now have a formal role in the state legislature.
