Garbage Crisis Deepens in Pune as Civic Disputes Delay Waste Collection Across Areas

Uncollected waste piles up for days in several Pune localities, with boundary disputes between civic offices hampering sanitation efforts and raising serious public health concerns among residents
Pune | 20 March, 2026: Pune’s long-standing promise of being a clean and well-managed city is under scrutiny as garbage collection issues worsen across multiple areas. Residents are facing growing health risks due to uncollected waste lying on streets for up to four to five days, exposing gaps in the city’s waste management system.
The issue was strongly raised during a recent general body meeting of the Pune Municipal Corporation, where corporators highlighted how administrative confusion between ward offices is delaying garbage collection. In several cases, officials from one regional office have reportedly shifted responsibility to another, leaving waste unattended in affected areas.
Corporator Sapna Chhajed noted that disputes between the Aundh and Dhole Patil ward offices over jurisdiction have led to garbage accumulating in public spaces, putting residents’ health at risk.
Similar concerns were raised by corporator Ramchandra Mankar, who said that the city’s “Garbage-Free Kasba” initiative appears ineffective on the ground. He alleged that even basic sweeping and waste lifting are not being carried out consistently, including in residential societies.
In response, Solid Waste Management official Avinash Sapkal assured that immediate steps would be taken to resolve the issue. He stated that coordination between departments will be improved and efforts are underway to expand door-to-door waste collection, including in societies currently not covered.Despite these assurances, the situation highlights the urgent need for better coordination and accountability within the civic administration to prevent further deterioration of public hygiene.
