Raigad/Pune | 04 February, 2026:A gas tanker transporting propylene, an extremely flammable industrial gas, overturned on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near the Adoshi tunnel on Tuesday evening, triggering a significant gas leak and paralyzing traffic for more than 12 hours.

The accident occurred in the Khandala Ghat section when the tanker, reportedly descending the slope, lost control and tipped onto its side. Propylene began escaping from the damaged tanker, prompting immediate action from traffic police and emergency services due to the risk of fire or explosion.

Authorities swiftly shut the Mumbai-bound carriageway as a safety precaution, diverting vehicles and attempting to contain the leak. The closure led to long queues extending for several kilometres, with vehicles barely moving for hours. Even traffic bound for Pune was heavily delayed as authorities placed controls and diversions to manage the situation.

Commuters reported being stranded for much of the night without access to basic amenities such as food, water, or toilet facilities. Traffic police appealed to motorists to avoid the expressway until conditions returned to normal and alternative routes could be used.

Emergency teams, including hazardous materials experts, worked through the early hours to address the ongoing leak and secure the scene. Officials have not yet announced when the expressway will fully reopen, and travelers are advised to monitor updates before planning their journey.
