Rising oil prices due to conflict in the Middle East have prompted countries to impose restrictions, cut government spending, and limit school and office operations to manage the energy shortage
New Delhi | 11 March, 2026: The ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel has severely disrupted shipping through the Hormuz Strait, causing oil transport delays that are now triggering global economic ripples. Many countries, including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam, have announced emergency measures to cope with the surging fuel crisis.

In Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif implemented strict measures:
- Education: Two‑week school closure; higher education to operate online only.
- Government offices: Open only four days per week, except essential services.
- Salaries: 25% cut for parliamentarians; two‑day pay cut for senior officials.
- Fuel rationing: 80% of government vehicles grounded; restrictions on ministerial travel and official events.
- Expenditure cuts: Suspension of new ACs, furniture, and vehicle purchases.
Fear of shortages led to crowds at petrol stations, sparking scuffles and isolated gunfire incidents. Sri Lanka raised petrol and diesel prices by over 22 rupees per litre, resulting in long queues at fuel stations.

Other nations introduced varied measures:
- Philippines: Four‑day workweek, 10% fuel use reduction, AC limits, and transport subsidies for farmers.
- Hungary: Price caps on petrol-diesel; strategic reserves to curb price hikes.
- Egypt: Fuel prices increased by 17%; economic relief measures announced.
- Taiwan: Partial reduction of fuel taxes.
- Myanmar: Rotational road usage for vehicles to reduce fuel consumption.
- UK: Citizens advised to avoid unnecessary travel; fuel price oversight implemented.
- South Korea: Fuel price limits applied for the first time in 30 years.
- Japan: Preparing to release reserve crude oil stocks to stabilize the market.
Experts warn that the Middle East conflict could prolong energy supply disruptions, making coordinated global strategies essential to prevent further economic and social instability.
