India plans to develop 24 terminals across 11 new national waterways, aiming to significantly expand inland water transport and increase passenger movement to over seven crore by 2031

Mumbai | 06 March 2026: The government has unveiled an ambitious plan to strengthen inland water transport by developing 24 terminals across 11 newly identified national waterways, a move expected to significantly enhance passenger connectivity and cargo movement across several regions. Officials said the initiative aims to expand the existing inland waterway network from around 125 kilometres to nearly 340 kilometres through extensive development and modernisation projects.

According to authorities, the new terminals will be constructed along 11 waterways where passenger and freight services are expected to increase substantially in the coming years. The government estimates that by 2039, the number of passengers travelling through these waterways could rise to nearly 7.39 crore, reflecting growing demand for efficient water-based transport systems.

The initiative also includes plans to introduce around 5,500 new radio-based navigation systems to enhance safety and communication across the waterways. .Authorities believe that expanding inland waterways will help reduce travel congestion on highways while offering an environmentally friendly mode of transport.
