Pune Rural police foil planned dacoity at Rajgurunagar, arrest three gang members from Godhra; investigation continues as two accomplices remain on the run.

Pune | December 10, 2025: A major crackdown by the rural police near Rajgurunagar has foiled a planned dacoity by a gang reportedly based in Godhra, Gujarat. Acting on a tip‑off, officers spotted a suspicious tempo parked along the service road of the Pune–Nashik highway near Holewadi village. Upon inspection, three suspects were arrested on the spot while two others managed to escape.

The arrested men- aged 21 to 42 and all residents of Godhra- were found in possession of tools commonly used for burglary: screwdrivers, iron rods, cutters, a billhook, and a battery. Their inability to provide a satisfactory explanation for the suspicious gear immediately raised alarm. During questioning, they admitted that they had been preparing for a dacoity targeting the Rajgurunagar area.

Further inquiry revealed that this was not their first offence. Records show that the same group had earlier stolen tyres worth over ₹5 lakh from a truck parked at a petrol pump in Shikrapur on November 14. In total, there are ten cases registered against them across Maharashtra and Gujarat. Police suspect that the two absconding accomplices might be involved in some of those prior incidents too.

Officials leading the operation highlighted how quick detection and timely action prevented a major crime. The rural crime‑branch that carried out the arrest is now focused on tracking down the missing members and recovering any stolen property. They have also warned local residents and businesses in and around Rajgurunagar to be extra vigilant.

This bust underscores the persistent threat posed by inter‑state criminal gangs operating along highways and semi‑urban belts – often targeting trucks, petrol pumps and vulnerable locations. Experts say such gangs exploit gaps in surveillance and poor lighting on service roads to carry out illegal activities. The fact that the gang was travelling in a tempo with ready burglary tools signals a high level of planning and coordination.

Police have vowed to expand their crackdown. They plan to ramp up patrolling along the Pune-Nashik highway, set up checkpoints near known flash‑points, and coordinate with neighbouring state police to dismantle the entire network. Meanwhile, residents and truck‑operators have been urged to report any suspicious vehicles or persons immediately.

The arrested suspects are currently in police custody, and investigations continue. Authorities say they are examining links to previous thefts and checking whether the gang had planned more such crimes in the region. The coming days could see fresh arrests and more recoveries, depending on leads from mobile data, CCTV footage, and information from local informants.
