Half of Pimpri-Chinchwad Civic Seats Reserved for Women, Leaving Male Aspirants in a Tough Spot
Pimpri
With half of Pimpri-Chinchwad’s 128 civic seats reserved for women, many male aspirants are being forced out, while a new generation of female leaders is emerging strongly.
Pimpri | November 11, 2025: The upcoming Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) elections are expected to mark the rise of women’s leadership, as 64 out of 128 seats have been reserved for women. This move has left many male aspirants struggling, especially those without eligible female candidates in their families.
Half of the seats in every category Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and Open—are reserved for women. In all 32 wards, two seats each are designated for women, limiting options for male contestants.
Scheduled for January 2026, the civic polls have already seen a surge in interest from women candidates. Many former corporators have returned to the political scene, and several new female leaders are making their mark through activism and community work. Their growing presence signals tough competition for male contenders this year.
According to Deputy Commissioner Sachin Pawar, only women from the reserved categories can contest from those seats, but they are also free to contest from open seats, potentially increasing their overall representation.
A similar scenario was witnessed in 2012, when women won 66 out of 128 seats, surpassing their male counterparts. In the 2017 elections, 64 women were elected. This trend suggests an even stronger presence of women in the upcoming term.
Candidates unable to contest directly may still find opportunities as ‘nominated corporators.’ The PCMC allows for five nominated members, along with 24 representatives across eight regional offices making a total of 29 possible appointments without elections.
