Harshvardhan Sadgir secured his second Maharashtra Kesari title, defeating training partner Mahendra Gaikwad 4-3 in a closely fought final at the prestigious wrestling championship in Pune

Pune | 23 March, 2026: Wrestler Harshvardhan Sadgir emerged victorious to claim his second ‘Maharashtra Kesari’ title after a gripping 4-3 win over his training partner Mahendra Gaikwad in the final bout.

The prestigious championship, organised by the Maharashtra State Wrestling Association, was held at a packed venue in Wagholi, Pune, drawing massive crowds for the title clash. Both wrestlers, who train under Arjuna Award-winning coach Kaka Pawar, showcased exceptional skill and resilience in a closely contested match.

The bout began on an aggressive note, with Gaikwad taking an early lead. However, lapses in discipline cost him crucial points, allowing Sadgir to stay in contention. At halftime, the score remained tied, but Sadgir capitalised on opportunities in the latter half, building a narrow lead.

Despite a late push from Gaikwad, who managed to secure points towards the end, Sadgir maintained his composure and defensive strength to seal the victory. With this win, Sadgir becomes the sixth wrestler in the competition’s history to win the Maharashtra Kesari title twice.

Earlier, Gaikwad had defeated Sikandar Shaikh in the mud category final, while Sadgir dominated Jay Patil in the mat category to qualify for the title bout.The event witnessed high enthusiasm among spectators, though crowd management remained a challenge. The prize distribution ceremony was conducted in the presence of state ministers, where Sadgir was awarded a silver mace, ₹5 lakh cash prize, and a car.
