Heavy Rains Disrupt Supply, Leading to Surge in Fruit and Vegetable Prices in Pune
Continuous rainfall across Maharashtra has caused significant crop damage, leading to a 20–30% increase in fruit and vegetable prices in Pune markets.
Pune, October 06, 2025: Pune is witnessing a significant rise in fruit and vegetable prices as continuous heavy rains across Maharashtra have disrupted crop production and supply chains. Leafy vegetables such as coriander, fenugreek, and spinach have seen prices soar due to reduced arrivals and quality deterioration caused by excess moisture. Other staples including green chillies, bell peppers, cauliflower, and carrots have also experienced a 15–20% price hike as lower yields and transportation challenges restrict supply. The onion crop in Nashik district has been particularly affected, with around 80% of the kharif harvest damaged, raising fears of scarcity and further price increases in the coming months.
At Pune’s Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard, vehicle arrivals have dropped from approximately 1,800 to just 1,450, reflecting a 30–40% decline in supply. Retailers report that high prices have made consumers hesitant to purchase, and the quality of available produce has declined, with some vegetables showing early signs of spoilage. Farmers and traders are hoping for a break in the rainfall to stabilize prices, improve supply, and restore normal market conditions. The ongoing weather disruption underscores the vulnerability of local produce markets to seasonal extremes and highlights the urgent need for improved storage and distribution infrastructure to mitigate the impact on consumers and farmers alike.
