Kedarnath Dham has been covered under a thick layer of snow following continuous snowfall, with security forces maintaining strict vigilance amid harsh weather conditions and sub-zero temperatures.

Kedarnath | March 23, 2026: The revered Kedarnath Dham has been enveloped in a thick blanket of snow after continuous heavy snowfall in the region, transforming the temple town into a pristine white landscape while posing fresh challenges for authorities and preparations ahead of the pilgrimage season.

According to officials, snowfall over the past few days has led to an accumulation of nearly three to four feet of snow across the temple and surrounding Kedar Valley. Kedarnath Temple, one of the most sacred shrines in India, now stands amid a vast expanse of snow, creating a visually stunning yet harsh environment.

Despite the extreme weather conditions, personnel from the Uttarakhand Police and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) have remained stationed in the area, maintaining round-the-clock vigilance. Authorities confirmed that security forces are fully alert to ensure safety and monitor any potential risks arising from the snowfall and freezing temperatures.

The sudden weather shift has also impacted ongoing preparations for the upcoming Char Dham Yatra, which is scheduled to begin in April. Officials indicated that continuous snowfall has made it difficult for teams to carry out infrastructure work and route clearing operations in the high-altitude region.

Meteorological conditions in Uttarakhand have remained unstable, with repeated spells of snowfall reported across higher altitudes, including Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. Experts attribute these changing weather patterns partly to climatic variations, as snowfall has occurred multiple times during March, which is relatively unusual.

Authorities have stepped up monitoring and preparedness measures in light of the situation. Rescue teams, medical support units and logistical systems are being kept ready to respond swiftly in case of emergencies. The administration has also advised pilgrims and travellers to stay updated on weather conditions and follow official guidelines before planning visits to the region.

The heavy snowfall, while posing logistical challenges, has also enhanced the scenic beauty of the Himalayan shrine, drawing attention to its spiritual and natural grandeur. However, officials emphasised that safety remains the top priority, especially given the difficult terrain and unpredictable weather in the region.

With the Char Dham Yatra approaching, efforts are underway to clear routes, restore accessibility and ensure that all necessary facilities are in place before the arrival of devotees. The administration is expected to intensify operations once weather conditions improve.

The situation highlights the delicate balance between natural beauty and environmental challenges in high-altitude pilgrimage sites like Kedarnath. Continuous monitoring and coordinated efforts between security forces and local authorities will be crucial in ensuring a safe and smooth pilgrimage season in the coming weeks.
