New QR-code signboards on national highways will let travellers scan and access live updates, helplines, and nearby services at a tap.

Pune, October 07, 2025: Travellers on India’s national highways can soon expect a smarter, safer journey — thanks to a new initiative installing signboards embedded with QR codes that unlock real-time project updates, emergency contacts, and nearby facility details. These vertical boards will be placed at strategic locations such as toll plazas, rest stops, truck lay-bys, and the start/end points of highway stretches.

Once scanned, a signboard’s QR code will display information including the highway number, chainage (precise distance marker), length of the stretch, ongoing construction or maintenance timelines, and contact details for key personnel such as highway patrol, toll managers, project engineers, and field offices. Crucially, commuters can also access emergency helpline numbers (like 1033) directly from their phones.

Beyond project and contact details, the system provides a digital directory of nearby utilities — hospitals, petrol pumps, public restrooms, police stations, restaurants, vehicle repair shops, EV charging stations, and parking zones. In emergencies or breakdowns, this kind of access can make a tangible difference in how quickly travellers can get help or services.

The rollout is part of a broader push to modernize road infrastructure and improve transparency and convenience for highway users. Officials have emphasized that integrating digital tools with traditional signage is aimed at offering a more connected and informative travel experience.

As highways across India get equipped with these QR-code-enabled boards, drivers and commuters will have a powerful tool at their fingertips — better situational awareness, faster access to help, and seamless navigation through long stretches of road. This is a notable step toward turning India’s highways into smarter corridors of mobility.
