Hinjawadi has recorded 36 deaths in 11 months, prompting strict police action against heavy vehicles and renewed focus on repairing damaged roads, managing congestion, and improving safety across the busy IT corridor.

Pune | November 20,2025: Hinjawadi’s Rajiv Gandhi IT Park, one of India’s busiest technology hubs, has turned into a dangerous accident zone, with 36 fatalities reported in the last 11 months. Narrow roads, damaged stretches, poor planning, and rising traffic have made the area increasingly unsafe for both IT employees and local residents who use the corridor daily.

Police officials said the root of the problem lies in relentless traffic congestion caused by constant residential growth and large construction projects in Hinjawadi, Wakad, Ravet, Punawale, and Tathawade. Despite time-bound restrictions on the movement of heavy and oversized vehicles, many drivers continue to violate the rules. In the past year alone, police have registered offenses against more than 59,000 drivers, collecting ₹6.67 crore in fines.

Authorities are now preparing to issue notices to RMC plant operators and major builders, many of whom are linked to the illegal movement of heavy vehicles during restricted hours. Senior officials said that unless this activity is controlled, road conditions and accident numbers will continue to worsen.

With over 130 IT companies and nearly 3–4 lakh daily commuters, traffic pressure in the area has reached an unsustainable level. The ongoing Metro work has added another layer of obstruction by narrowing lanes and creating new choke points. Piles of construction debris have reduced visibility and made turns risky, especially during peak hours.

Police have called for immediate steps, including clearing Metro-related debris, repairing potholes, creating organized parking pockets, and widening narrow stretches wherever possible. Officials also emphasized that pedestrian crossings, signages, and speed monitoring need urgent upgrades to prevent further loss of life.

Local authorities say that long-term safety will depend on a coordinated effort between the police, municipal bodies, builders, and Metro contractors. Until then, officers are increasing patrolling and surveillance during morning and evening peak hours in an attempt to curb accidents across Pune’s largest IT corridor.
