The first section of the Hinjewadi–Baner metro is set to open within months and four parking lots will be built by the civic body to support commuter access.

Pune,October 29, 2025 – Pune’s much-awaited metro expansion is set to take a significant leap forward as the Hinjewadi–Baner section of Line 3 nears completion. Officials have confirmed that the new corridor could become operational within the next two to three months. To support seamless commuter access, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is simultaneously developing four dedicated parking lots along the route.

According to civic authorities, these parking hubs will be located near major stations in the Baner–Balewadi stretch — specifically around Amar Tech Park, Iris Society, Cosmos Society, and the ABZ area. Each facility will be situated within a short distance of the metro stations to ensure convenience for passengers who prefer to park their vehicles and use the metro for the rest of their journey.

The Hinjewadi–Baner section forms part of the 23.3-kilometre metro corridor connecting Hinjewadi IT Park to Shivajinagar. Once completed, this line will play a crucial role in easing traffic congestion between Pune’s IT hub and central business districts. The section nearing launch marks an important phase in the project, which aims to link major residential and employment clusters across the western part of the city.

PMC officials have clarified that while the civic body will handle the construction of these parking lots, operational management may later be handed over to the metro authority under a leasing or revenue-sharing model. The parking fee structure will be finalised by the civic administration to ensure affordability and consistent standards across all facilities.

Urban planners believe the initiative reflects growing awareness of Pune’s last-mile connectivity challenges. For years, commuters have faced difficulties accessing metro and bus routes due to limited parking options, poor pedestrian infrastructure, and unregulated feeder services. By investing in well-located parking lots, the civic body hopes to encourage more residents to shift from private vehicles to public transport for their daily commute.

The project also aligns with Pune’s broader mobility vision — to promote sustainable, multi-modal transport options that reduce road congestion and vehicle emissions. Officials estimate that the Hinjewadi–Baner metro section, once fully functional, could serve thousands of daily commuters and substantially decongest arterial roads like Baner Road and the Hinjewadi flyover.

However, transport experts caution that the success of the initiative depends on effective coordination between agencies. Timely completion of the parking hubs, clear signage, and affordable rates will determine how many commuters actually opt for park-and-ride facilities. Moreover, the integration of these hubs with metro stations through safe, well-lit pathways and shuttle services will be vital to user convenience.

Residents in the Hinjewadi and Baner areas have welcomed the announcement, expressing hope that the metro will finally offer a reliable alternative to road traffic delays that often stretch beyond an hour during rush hours. The upcoming metro service is expected to not only ease commuting but also boost real estate and commercial growth in surrounding neighbourhoods.

As the city moves closer to the launch, final safety inspections, signal testing, and alignment calibrations are underway. The Pune Metro authorities are expected to announce trial runs soon, followed by an official inauguration once necessary clearances are secured.
