Cab driver bites IT professional in Hinjewadi after fare dispute. Accused arrested as shocking incident raises safety concerns in Pune.

Pune | 19March, 2026: A disturbing incident from Pune’s Hinjewadi IT hub has raised serious concerns over commuter safety after a cab driver allegedly bit a passenger during a heated fare dispute. The shocking episode unfolded on March 16, when a 42-year-old IT professional from Nana Peth booked a ride through an app to return home from Hinjewadi Phase I. What began as a routine ride quickly escalated into a violent confrontation, leaving the passenger injured and shaken.

According to police reports, the dispute began when the cab driver refused to accept the fare displayed on the ride-hailing application and instead demanded payment based on the meter. This disagreement soon turned into a verbal altercation. As tensions escalated, the driver allegedly abused and physically assaulted the passenger before biting his hand, causing serious injuries to his fingers.

The victim later approached the police and filed a formal complaint. Based on his statement, a case was registered at the Hinjewadi Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges related to voluntarily causing hurt. The accused, identified as a 30-year-old resident of Dhayari, was promptly arrested, and further investigation is currently underway.

This incident is not just an isolated act of violence but reflects a growing pattern of disputes between drivers and passengers in Pune’s rapidly expanding IT corridor. Hinjewadi, known for its dense concentration of tech parks and daily influx of thousands of employees, witnesses a high volume of app-based cab rides. With increasing demand, disagreements over fares, routes, and payments have also become more frequent.

In fact, recent reports suggest that such altercations are becoming increasingly common across Pune. In another incident earlier this week, a heated argument involving a cab driver in a nearby area also went viral, highlighting the rising tensions on city roads. These recurring incidents point towards deeper issues such as lack of regulation, driver dissatisfaction with app-based pricing models, and absence of conflict resolution mechanisms.

Experts believe that ride-hailing platforms need to introduce stricter guidelines and real-time grievance redressal systems to prevent such situations from escalating. There is also a growing demand for better driver training programs focusing on customer handling and stress management. On the other hand, passengers are being advised to remain cautious, avoid confrontations, and immediately report any suspicious or aggressive behavior through official channels.

The incident has triggered concern among IT professionals who rely heavily on cab services for daily commuting, especially during odd hours. Many have taken to social media expressing fear and urging authorities to ensure stricter safety measures. Increased police patrolling in high-density areas like Hinjewadi and better monitoring of cab services are among the key demands being raised.
