Historian Dr. Jaysingrao Pawar Cremated with State Honours in Kolhapur

Renowned historian and Maratha history scholar Dr. Jaysingrao Pawar was laid to rest with full state honours, drawing tributes from leaders, scholars, and citizens across Maharashtra.

Kolhapur | 26 March, 2026: Eminent historian and noted researcher of Maratha history, Dr. Jaysingrao Pawar, was cremated with full state honours in Kolhapur on Thursday, marking the end of an era in historical scholarship. His passing has been widely mourned, with many remembering him as a progressive thinker and a leading voice in interpreting Maratha history.
A large number of citizens gathered at his residence for final darshan before the funeral procession began in the morning. His mortal remains were carried in a flower-decked vehicle, accompanied by chants honouring his contributions to history and society. The last rites were performed at Panchganga crematorium, where the Kolhapur Police accorded him a ceremonial guard of honour. The tribute included a band salute and a three-round gun salute, reflecting the state’s recognition of his contributions. Prominent personalities, including Shahu Maharaj, Pratap Singh Jadhav, Sambhaji Raje, and several senior officials such as District Collector Amol Yedge and Superintendent of Police Yogesh Kumar Gupta, paid their respects by offering floral tributes.

The decision to accord state honours was facilitated following efforts by senior figures, with approval reportedly conveyed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Dr. Pawar dedicated his life to the study of Maharashtra’s history, particularly the Maratha era, and played a key role in founding research institutions and editing significant historical works. His legacy is expected to continue influencing future generations of historians.
