Hundreds of Trucks Dump Debris in Mula-Mutha Riverbed at Sangamwadi, NGT Orders Allegedly Ignored

Large-scale debris dumping has reportedly resumed in the green belt of the Mula-Mutha riverbed at Sangamwadi, Pune, with hundreds of truckloads being unloaded despite National Green Tribunal (NGT) directives. Civic authorities and the irrigation department are facing allegations of turning a blind eye, while the activity is believed to be aimed at creating parking grounds on the riverbed.

Pune | March 26, 2026: In a serious environmental concern, hundreds of truckloads of construction debris are allegedly being dumped into the Mula-Mutha riverbed at Sangamwadi, violating National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders and threatening the protected green belt zone. The dumping activity, which has reportedly continued for several days, is raising questions about the enforcement of environmental regulations in the city. According to local sources, heavy trucks carrying rubble and waste material have been frequently entering the riverbed area and unloading debris in large quantities. The riverbed falls under a designated green belt, where any form of encroachment or dumping is prohibited. Despite this, the illegal activity is said to be progressing openly, suggesting weak monitoring and lack of strict action.

Residents and activists have alleged that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the irrigation department are conveniently ignoring the situation. They claim the debris dumping is being carried out systematically to level the riverbed land and convert it into open parking grounds, possibly benefiting private interests. Environmental experts warn that such dumping can severely impact the river’s natural flow, reduce water-carrying capacity, and increase flood risk during monsoon season. Debris accumulation can also damage aquatic ecosystems and permanently alter the river’s ecological balance.

Reports indicate that earlier warnings and orders were issued by the NGT to prevent such activities in the Mula-Mutha river stretch. However, the continued dumping suggests that the directives are not being implemented effectively on the ground. Citizens have demanded immediate intervention, strict penalties against those responsible, and restoration of the damaged green belt. They have also urged the administration to deploy surveillance and strengthen enforcement to prevent further destruction of the river ecosystem. The incident has once again highlighted the growing pressure on Pune’s natural resources amid rapid urban development and inadequate environmental safeguards.
