An Indian Air Force Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district after losing radar contact during a training sortie from Jorhat, triggering search operations and confirming the death of two pilots
Karbi Anglong | 6 March, 2026: A Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district during a routine training mission after it lost radar contact shortly after take-off from the Jorhat Air Force Station on Thursday evening.

According to defence officials, the twin-seater fighter jet went off radar at around 7:42 pm while on a scheduled sortie. Soon after the aircraft was reported overdue, the Indian Air Force launched a search and rescue operation in the hilly and forested areas of Karbi Anglong, located about 60 kilometres from Jorhat.

The Air Force later confirmed that the aircraft had crashed in the region during the mission. Rescue teams and local authorities were mobilised to locate the wreckage and assess the situation at the crash site.
In an official statement, the Indian Air Force expressed deep condolences and confirmed that both pilots on board lost their lives in the accident. The deceased officers were identified as Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar.

The Su-30MKI is one of the Indian Air Force’s frontline multi-role fighter jets. Developed by Russia’s Sukhoi and produced in India under licence by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the aircraft plays a crucial role in India’s air defence and strategic operations.
Officials said an investigation will be carried out to determine the cause of the crash. The Air Force has assured full support to the families of the officers who lost their lives while serving the nation.
