Maharashtra’s housing societies are increasingly concerned about lift safety under outdated rules. MLA Siddharth Shirole calls for urgent enforcement of the 2017 Act with mandatory audits.

Nagapur | December 15, 2025:Safety concerns regarding lifts in Maharashtra’s housing societies have once again come to the forefront. Residents and experts are urging the government to finally implement the Maharashtra Lift & Moving Walkways Act, 2017, which has been pending for years. At present, lift operations are still guided by the outdated 1958 Lift Safety Policy, which fails to address the needs of modern lift systems.

Despite the Act being passed in 2017, the rules have not yet been put into practice, and proposed amendments are still awaiting approval. Stakeholders emphasize that any updated framework must include modern safety standards, regular audits, and clear accountability in case of breakdowns or accidents.

Among the key recommendations are installing accident and breakdown memory recording devices and defining responsibility mechanisms to ensure residents are protected. Safety advocates highlight that the delay leaves residents particularly senior citizens, children, and people with disabilities exposed to unnecessary risks.During the winter Assembly session, Shivaji Nagar MLA Siddharth Shirole stressed the need for immediate action. “Housing societies continue to operate without proper legal safeguards, putting residents’ safety at risk. The government must finalize the pending amendments and implement the 2017 Act without further delay,” he said.

Experts and civic representatives agree that enforcing regular lift audits and modernizing safety protocols are essential. The call is clear: Maharashtra’s urban housing complexes must adopt contemporary safety standards to protect residents and ensure accountability. Swift action is no longer optional it is necessary for public safety.
