Pune| December 24,2025: The Income Tax Department has launched a round-the-clock control room in Pune to keep a strict watch on the use of money during the ongoing Maharashtra Municipal Corporation elections, part of a broader push to ensure free and fair local body polls. The control room will operate 24 hours a day for the entire duration that the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) remains in effect, providing a centralized hub for monitoring monetary irregularities and illegal inducements associated with election campaigns. Citizens are being urged to report any suspicious use of cash, unaccounted funds, or distribution of valuables linked to electioneering via multiple channels, including a toll-free number, WhatsApp, SMS, or email, with authorities emphasizing that credible public inputs will be acted on swiftly. This initiative is part of the department’s wider election surveillance mechanism covering not just Pune’s municipal elections but also other municipal corporations in the region, including Thane, Ulhasnagar, Kalyan-Dombivli, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar, Panvel, Ahilyanagar, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur, Kolhapur, Ichalkaranji, and Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad, underscoring the scale of the department’s oversight scope.
By urging citizens to come forward with information, officials hope to harness community participation to deter the circulation of unaccounted money and maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
