India has formally conveyed condolences to Iran following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and urged restraint amid rising tensions in West Asia
New Delhi | 6 March, 2026: India has expressed condolences to Iran after the death of the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The move marks New Delhi’s first official response after the senior Iranian leader was killed in military strikes that have intensified geopolitical concerns in the region.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi and signed the condolence book on behalf of the Government of India and its people. During the visit, he conveyed sympathy to Iran’s leadership and people and also held a brief interaction with Iran’s ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali.
Officials said the gesture reflects India’s diplomatic outreach to Iran during a sensitive period in West Asia. The development follows the killing of Khamenei in a military operation reportedly carried out by the United States and Israel, an event that has significantly heightened tensions in the region and drawn global attention.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also spoke with his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi to discuss the evolving situation in the region. The conversation comes amid growing concerns that the ongoing conflict could further destabilise West Asia and impact global energy supplies and security dynamics.
India has called for restraint and emphasised the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to prevent further escalation. The government has been closely monitoring developments in the region, given India’s strategic interests and its large diaspora in several Middle Eastern countries.

The death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who led Iran since 1989, has triggered mourning across Iran and reactions from governments worldwide as the country navigates political transition and regional tensions.
