India Secures 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championship Hosting Rights, Iran Maintains World Cup Participation Amid US Tensions

India has been awarded the 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championship, while Iran confirms participation in the FIFA World Cup despite political tensions with the United States over match venues

Bhubaneswar/Tehran | 20 March, 2026: In a major boost to India’s global sporting ambitions, the country has secured the hosting rights for the prestigious 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championship. The event will be Organised in Bhubaneswar, marking a historic moment for Indian athletics on the world stage. The decision was finalised during a key meeting of the World Athletics Council held in Toruń, Poland. World Athletics Vice President Adille Sumariwalla confirmed the development, stating that the plan will significantly strengthen India’s position in international athletics and inspire future talent.

The hosting rights are expected to enhance sports infrastructure and bring global attention to Odisha’s capital, which has emerged as a prominent hub for international sporting events in recent years.

Meanwhile, in a separate development reflecting the intersection of sports and geopolitics, Iran has clarified its stance on the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Iranian Football Federation President Mehdi Taj stated that while the country maintains a boycott stance against the United States, it will not withdraw from the World Cup.

Iran has requested FIFA to shift its scheduled matches from the United States to Mexico, citing ongoing political tensions and security concerns. However, FIFA has reportedly declined to alter the match schedule. Mexico has expressed willingness to host Iran’s matches if required.

The situation has gained further attention following recent regional conflicts and security warnings, adding uncertainty over match venues and player safety. The global football community now awaits FIFA’s final position on Iran’s request.
