Indurikar Maharaj, the well-known kirtankar and social preacher, announced he is considering stepping away from public kirtans following criticism over his daughter’s lavish engagement ceremony.

Pune, 13 November 2025 – Indurikar Maharaj has sparked a wave of reactions after announcing that he is reconsidering whether he should continue performing kirtans. The statement came in the middle of widespread criticism directed at him following his daughter’s engagement ceremony, which went viral on social media. Photos and videos from the event triggered debate about the scale of the celebration, as well as comments about his daughter’s outfit. Maharaj said the criticism had become deeply personal and had now crossed a line by targeting his family instead of his work.

He expressed disappointment over the way people reacted online and questioned why anyone would mock a young woman for her clothing. According to him, the remarks were not only intrusive but also disrespectful. He shared that he has dealt with criticism for many years, but the shift toward attacking his daughter’s appearance and the family’s private event made him feel the need to reconsider his public role. In a video message circulating widely, he said the situation had become difficult enough for him to think about whether performing kirtan publicly was worth continuing.

His words have drawn mixed responses. Supporters have expressed empathy, saying that no public figure deserves invasive scrutiny into their family matters. They argue that the engagement was a private celebration and that dragging his daughter into controversies is unfair. On the other hand, some online commentators continue to question whether religious figures should hold grand functions that appear contrary to the simplicity they preach.

The possibility of Maharaj stepping away from kirtan has caused concern among his followers, many of whom attend his events regularly for spiritual guidance. For years he has been known for his distinct style of storytelling, humour and moral teachings that attract large crowds across Maharashtra. His potential departure would mark a significant change in the state’s devotional landscape.

The debate also opens a larger conversation about how public figures in spiritual or cultural roles are judged by society. Many argue that the scrutiny placed on their families is unreasonable. Others feel that the expectations tied to such personalities come with the territory. With social media amplifying every moment, even personal functions can quickly become subjects of public interpretation.

For now, Maharaj has not confirmed whether he will stop performing, but the emotional tone of his statement suggests he is deeply affected by the criticism. His final decision will likely depend on how the situation unfolds and how his supporters respond in the coming days. What remains clear is that the incident has highlighted the growing tension between private life and public perception in the digital age, especially for individuals who hold influential cultural or spiritual roles.
