Over 40 forest officers from Pune region attended a technical training session led by South African wildlife experts, focusing on conflict management
International wildlife specialists from South Africa, including Heine Schoeman of Legacy Wildlife Foundation and wildlife veterinarian Dr. Josephine Scharup Peterson of VetX, led the training. They shared insights on global wildlife management practices, population control strategies and safe wildlife capture techniques.

The session focused on practical applications for field officers managing forest boundaries, conflict zones and rescue operations. Participants engaged in detailed discussions on improving coordination, strengthening ground-level response and adopting ecosystem-based approaches to reduce conflict.
Speaking about the significance of the program, Ashish Thackeray said that while South Africa’s conditions differ from Maharashtra, several principles and procedures shared by the experts can help improve field operations. He emphasised the need for continuous capacity-building for frontline forest staff.
Tuhin Satarkar, Director of Wildlife Operations at RESQ, noted that such exchanges help broaden perspectives and encourage better decision-making during real-world incidents. He added that international collaborations support long-term solutions and strengthen wildlife management efforts across the state.

The session concluded with a commitment to enhance on-ground preparedness and develop more scientific approaches to managing human-wildlife interactions in Maharashtra.
