Kolhapur
More than a year after a fire gutted the Keshavrao Bhosale Theatre in Kolhapur, restoration is delayed. Artists accuse officials of inaction and plan a public protest.
Kolhapur | November 4, 2025:Artists and theatre‐lovers in Kolhapur are raising their voices over the delay in restoring the Keshavrao Bhosale Theatre, locally known as Sangeetsurya. More than a year has passed since the building was gutted by fire, yet the reconstruction remains incomplete.
Following the blaze, officials had assured that repairs would be finished within a year. A budget of ₹25 crore was announced for the restoration.
But as of now, even the main roof has not been fully restored and artists claim they have been given “strange excuses” by contractors and administration alike. This ongoing delay has frustrated Kolhapur’s creative community, many of whom rely on the theatre for performances, rehearsals, and cultural events.

While the government had sanctioned funds, local theatre activists say work is proceeding too slowly. They’re pressing for immediate completion and more accountability from the contractors and civic bodies.
The fire had damaged not just the theatre auditorium but also threatened its heritage value.Keshavrao Bhosale Theatre has long been a landmark for performing arts in the district.
As the protest takes shape, artists hope to force an expedited schedule. They are demanding clear timelines, better supervision of contractors, and regular updates on progress or risk the theatre remaining unusable for yet another season.
