Kerala will become India’s first state to eliminate extreme poverty, with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announcing the achievement on November 1, 2025, during the State Formation Day celebrations.

Thiruvananthapuram| Kerala – October 23, 2025:In a historic move, Kerala is set to become India’s first state to be declared free from extreme poverty. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will make the official announcement on November 1, 2025, coinciding with the state’s formation day celebrations at the Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. The event will be graced by prominent personalities, including actors Mohanlal, Mammootty, and Kamal Haasan.

This milestone follows the successful implementation of the state’s Extreme Poverty Eradication Project (EPEP), launched in 2021. The initiative identified and uplifted 64,006 families, focusing on providing essential services like food, healthcare, livelihood, and housing. Efforts included issuing vital documents to over 21,000 individuals, constructing homes for nearly 4,000 families, and offering land and financial assistance for house repairs.

Minister for Local Self-Governments MB Rajesh highlighted that, according to NITI Aayog’s 2021 study, Kerala had the lowest poverty rate in India at 0.7%. The state’s comprehensive approach, involving government departments, volunteers, and community participation, has been pivotal in achieving this feat. Minister Rajesh emphasized that this achievement positions Kerala as a global leader in poverty eradication, second only to China in eliminating extreme poverty.

The declaration on November 1 marks a significant achievement in Kerala’s commitment to inclusive development and social welfare.
