BJP’s Kirit Somaiya says he was betrayed after a 2019 meeting with Uddhav Thackeray – claims leaders in his own party have vowed never to forgive him.

Mumbai, December 09, 2025: Senior BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has claimed that several leaders within his own party “cannot forgive” him for meeting Uddhav Thackeray ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Somaiya said the meeting, which he believed was part of routine political dialogue, instead triggered long-term resentment and distrust among certain BJP leaders, affecting his position inside the organisation.

According to Somaiya, the intention behind the meeting was to reduce political friction at a time when alliances in Maharashtra were shifting. He said the meeting was neither secret nor personal, but still drew harsh reactions from within the party. He suggested that even today, key leaders see his decision as a political misstep rather than a strategic conversation.

Somaiya also recalled that period as one filled with internal tension, with party workers divided on how to approach changing equations with the Shiv Sena. The later political split between the parties, and changing alliances over the years, have only intensified feelings in hindsight. Somaiya now believes some leaders have chosen to hold him responsible for a decision that was taken with the larger political context in mind.

Over the last few years, Somaiya has repeatedly targeted Uddhav Thackeray over alleged corruption cases and claimed that certain inquiries were ignored during the Shiv Sena-led government. He continues to argue that major irregularities were not pursued when the former chief minister was in power. According to him, the unresolved issues and political bitterness have kept the old distrust alive inside the BJP, even after major realignments.

Political observers feel Somaiya’s comments reveal the continuing strain between different factions within the party. They also suggest that personal perceptions and rivalries still influence internal politics. At the same time, some believe voicing such matters publicly could create challenges for party unity at a time when political equations in Maharashtra are shifting again.

Supporters of Somaiya say he has been consistent in exposing alleged corruption and that disagreements inside a party should not be treated as permanent stains. Critics, however, say taking internal grievances to the public stage could harm the organisation’s image and weaken its political messaging when elections are approaching.

For now, the statement adds a fresh layer to Maharashtra’s already complicated political environment. Whether the matter remains just a personal grievance or grows into a wider party debate will depend on the reaction from BJP leadership in the coming days.
