Kolhapur|January 30, 2026:In a significant stride towards smarter urban sanitation, the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation has rolled out a QR code‑based waste management system across more than 1.52 lakh properties in the city. The initiative forms part of the broader Swachh Maharashtra Swachhata Abhiyan, aimed at improving the efficiency, accountability, and transparency of waste collection operations.

Under this new system, QR code scanners have been installed on residential buildings, commercial properties, and other locations to enable real‑time tracking of garbage pickup and disposal services. When sanitation workers scan these codes during collection rounds, the system logs key details such as the location, time, and frequency of service which municipal authorities can then monitor digitally.

Kolhapur Municipal Commissioner K. Manjulakshmi has directed officials to complete QR code installation on remaining properties soon and ensure effective implementation of the program citywide. Officials say the digital tracking framework will help optimize route planning for sanitation vehicles, reduce missed pickups, and better allocate resources based on data trends. This initiative reflects a broader trend in Indian cities adopting digital tools for urban services. Similar QR code systems have been used in other municipalities to improve solid waste management, including tracking collection vehicles and logging service completion at individual households.

However, past attempts in some cities including earlier phases of Kolhapur’s own QR waste project faced implementation delays and public frustration, with residents complaining that codes remained unused for extended periods. By integrating QR codes, Kolhapur aims to foster a cleaner, more efficient waste management ecosystem that leverages digital oversight to enhance service delivery, ensuring accountability for both sanitation workers and contract agencies. Municipal officials believe this step will help sustain cleanliness drives while promoting community engagement in civic hygiene efforts.
