A collaborative cleanup pushed plastic waste, bottles and algae out of a key quarry in Kolhapur, as residents and civic groups highlighted the need to safeguard local water sources

Kolhapur | 27 February, 2026: Dozens of residents, youth activists, municipal officials and volunteers joined a two-hour cleanup drive at the Ganesh Vihar quarry in Mangeshkar Nagar area as part of a move to protect vital water sources and boost environmental awareness.

The site, a familiar landmark in the Manglwar Peth area, had become clogged with plastic bags, liquor bottles and thick patches of algae. Participants worked together to collect and remove waste from the quarry, turning an eyesore into a cleaner space for the community. Volunteers said the effort was aimed at reinforcing a shared responsibility toward preserving water resources amid broader environmental concerns in the city.

The drive was supported by local resident groups, social organizations, and officials from Kolhapur Municipal Corporation, who emphasised that maintaining clean water bodies is critical in the face of rising waste and pollution. Many participants carried signs and spoke about the importance of individual and collective actions to keep the environment healthy and sustainable.

Organisers also highlighted this cleanup as part of a wider set of recent efforts in Kolhapur to engage citizens in environmental protection, including other drives focused on lakes and historic water wells. These efforts have seen active participation from students, volunteers and various stakeholder groups across the city.
