Kolhapur faces a mounting waste management crisis with around 280 tonnes of garbage generated daily. Collection delays and incomplete processing at treatment facilities are fueling dumps, hygiene risks, and citizen frustration.

Kolhapur | December 19, 2025: Kolhapur is confronting a serious garbage management challenge as the volume of solid waste produced each day continues to outstrip the city’s processing capacity. Civic officials and residents report that roughly 280 tonnes of waste are generated across urban and suburban areas every 24 hours, but gaps in collection and processing have left significant amounts untreated and strewn in public spaces.

City and suburban neighbourhoods are seeing delays in garbage pickup, forcing some residents to deposit waste at open sites and along road edges. This has contributed to foul smells, unsightly piles of refuse and concerns among residents about health risks, especially near drains and common public areas.

Efforts to implement advanced waste treatment projects, like bio-mining of legacy waste and expansion of biogas facilities, are reported to be lagging behind their schedules. City officials acknowledge these plans are crucial to reducing existing garbage mounds, but progress remains slow and largely confined to planning stages.Municipal sources say part of the difficulty stems from inconsistent collection in outlying suburbs, where irregular service has encouraged open dumping. Without reliable daily pickup, residents have little option but to leave waste in public spaces, where it attracts pests and creates sanitation hazards.

Local leaders and civic administrators have previously sought funding to upgrade the city’s waste processing infrastructure, including proposals to increase capacity and improve treatment technology. These upgrades are seen as necessary to handle both current volumes and anticipated increases after the expansion of city limits to include fringe villages.

Residents are calling for more consistent collection schedules and quicker activation of planned facilities. Their concerns reflect a broader frustration with urban services that struggle to keep pace with the city’s growth. While municipal authorities continue to work on long-term solutions, the immediate challenge remains regular and effective waste clearance from all neighbourhoods.
