Kolhapur Urged to Improve Tourist Facilities as Foreign Visitors Skip the City Despite Growing India Influx

Kolhapur has seen limited foreign tourist interest due to lack of visitor amenities, even as international arrivals to India and Maharashtra surge, prompting calls for improved infrastructure and promotion
Kolhapur|February 12, 2026: Kolhapur, a city rich in heritage and cultural attractions, has yet to fully capitalise on the rapid increase in international tourism as foreign visitors continue to largely bypass the district, local stakeholders say. While India welcomed nearly 3.705 million foreign tourists in recent years and 17% of them visited destinations across Maharashtra, Kolhapur has not seen commensurate uptake in international footfall due to gaps in visitor facilities and services.

Tourism experts and local officials emphasise that the city’s potential remains significant given its historic landmarks, natural beauty, and cultural heritage, which could appeal to foreign travellers if supported by adequate infrastructure and promotion. Key attractions such as Rankala Lake and Shalini Palace, Siddhagiri Gramjivan Museum, as well as forts, temples, and nearby eco-tourism spots like Kalammawadi Dam and the Western Ghats region offer diverse experiences for global tourists.
However, stakeholders point to the lack of quality accommodations, international-standard amenities, visitor information systems, and targeted marketing as factors limiting Kolhapur’s ability to attract and retain more international visitors. Currently, facilities that would support foreign mid- to long-stay tourism such as multi-lingual signage, guided heritage tours, and enhanced transport connectivity are either in early stages or absent, leaving many visitors to choose other better-prepared destinations.

Local industry representatives argue that improving basic services from reliable hospitality options to clearly laid-out tourist circuits and safety measures along with intensive global promotion could make Kolhapur a more appealing stop on international travel itineraries. They also suggest engaging the private sector in developing boutique hotels, cultural festivals, and experiential tours that highlight the city’s unique identity.
District tourism planners are reportedly considering infrastructure upgrades, awareness campaigns, and collaboration with state tourism bodies to better integrate Kolhapur into broader Maharashtra and India tourism strategies, ensuring the city benefits from the overall rise in international tourism.
