Learner’s licence from Home: Step-by-Step Online Process, Documents and Test Explained

Applying for a learner’s licence in India has become fully digital, allowing applicants to complete most steps from home, including form submission, document upload, fee payment and even the test in some states.

New Delhi | March 23, 2026: Obtaining a learner’s licence, the first step towards legally driving in India, has become easier with the government’s online system that allows applicants to complete the process from home through the official transport portal.

Applicants can apply through the government’s Parivahan portal, eliminating the need for multiple visits to the Regional Transport Office (RTO). The digital process is aimed at making licensing more accessible, transparent and efficient.

To begin, applicants must visit the official Sarathi portal and select their respective state. They then need to choose the option “Apply for Learner’s Licence” and fill in personal details such as name, date of birth, address and the category of vehicle they intend to drive.

Once the application form is completed, users are required to upload scanned copies of necessary documents. These typically include proof of age (such as Aadhaar card, PAN card or birth certificate), proof of address (Aadhaar, passport, utility bill), passport-size photographs and medical certificates like Form 1 or Form 1A where applicable.

After uploading documents, applicants must pay the prescribed fee online, which generally ranges between ₹150 and ₹350 depending on the state. Following payment, a slot for the learner’s licence test can be booked online.

In several states, the learner’s licence test can also be taken remotely from home using Aadhaar-based authentication, while in others, candidates may need to appear at the RTO. The test is usually a computer-based multiple-choice exam designed to assess knowledge of traffic rules, road signs and basic driving principles.

The test typically consists of 10 to 20 questions, and candidates must secure the minimum passing marks to qualify. If an applicant fails, they can reappear for the test after a specified period.

Once the applicant clears the test, the learner’s licence is issued digitally and can be downloaded from the portal. In some cases, a physical copy may also be provided or sent to the registered address.

The learner’s licence is generally valid for six months. During this period, the holder is allowed to practise driving under supervision. After at least one month of holding the learner’s licence, applicants can apply for a permanent driving licence by appearing for a driving test at the RTO.

Authorities emphasise that the online system has significantly reduced paperwork and waiting time, making the process more user-friendly. However, applicants are advised to ensure that all documents are accurate and up to date to avoid rejection or delays.

With the increasing adoption of digital services, the learner’s licence process is now more streamlined than ever, enabling citizens to complete essential formalities from the comfort of their homes while ensuring better compliance with traffic regulations.
